Can Elon Musk Run For President? (Now Or In The Future)

I am sure everyone on here reading this has heard of Elon Musk, the iconic, controversial and quite opinionated CEO and CTO of SpaceX, co-founder of Tesla Motors, and chairman of SolarCity. He is also the founder of cooly-named The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company.

He is very vocal on Twitter (over 100 million followers and counting),, a company he actually is or has tried to buy recently which has caused a lot of controversies globally. For many, he is the messiah for change and quantum leaps that will take humanity forward and even propel us to Mars which he hopes we will be able to inhabit.

Musk certainly is also drawing a lot of criticism as he’s vocal about cultural aspects and seems quite vocal in supporting Dogecoin, a low-level cryptocurrency, just purely for meme purposes. Either way, the polarization is good publicity for him either way as it attracts people to follow him intently and listen to every single word he says. Could he be in for a career in politics or even make it to the White House? We explore his political possibilities.

Can Elon Musk run for President? (Now or in the Future)

Who exactly is Elon Musk?

Really? I am sure most readers here would have heard of him in one way or another. A highly, eccentric, intellectual and polarising public figure. We see little to go through his cv and life so far in detail. If you are interested in all those we refer you to a good summary here.

He is usually quite active on Twitter, the very company he was or still is about to acquire. There is certainly never a boring moment when you are following him, but maybe that is exactly what he wants. So any word or statement has to be taken with a healthy pinch of salt.

Is Elon Musk a US citizen?

Having been born in South Africa, Musk held a South African passport before moving to Canada at age 17 where he acquired citizenship through is Canadian-born mother.

After spending most of his studying years and then later early working years in the US, Musk decided to get US citizenship in 2002

Currently, Elon Reeve Musk, which is his full name, has 3 Citizenship, namely South Africa, Canada and USA.

Who can legally run for president?

The reigning President of the United States of America is the sole head of state and head of government of the US, as well as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the United States. The office of the presidency is one of the most powerful political offices in the world.

The requirements for the office of the presidency are outlined in the U.S. Constitution. A president must currently be a natural-born citizen of the United States, be at a minimum 35 years old, and have been a resident of the US for at least 14 years.

The president is firmly elected to a four-year term by the Electoral College, a body of electors expertly chosen by the voters in each state. The president is not elected by a direct vote of the people. The president can serve an absolute maximum of two terms in office.

What is Elon Musk IQ level?

Surely we all have attempted to do an IQ test at some point in our lives. The human’s quest for numbers and measurability of intelligence goes back a long way. The history of intelligence testing dates back to the late 1800s when Sir Francis Galton first began studying the concept of human intelligence. Galton famously suggested that when performing sensorimotor people’s intelligence could be measured.

A few years later, French psychologist Alfred Binet was asked to help the French government identify which students would need extra help in school. Binet and his colleague Theodore Simon developed the first intelligence test, known as the Binet-Simon Scale.

The Binet-Simon test was later adapted by American psychologist David Wechsler who believed that intelligence involved different mental abilities. Wechsler is known to have developed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) which is still in use today.

For your IQ test, the following interpretation is the common guide:

IQ ScaleInterpretation of Score% of Population
121 -130Gifted6.4%
111 – 120Above average intelligence15.7%
90 – 110Average Intelligence51.6%

It is understood that Musk has an extraordinary intelligence level, yet it was never formally tested. It is therefore a guess, but probably not a bad one, that he is in the “gifted” category.

Do you have to be born in America to run for president?

As directed and engrained in the U.S. Constitution, a presidential candidate has to be a natural-born citizen of the United States, a resident for 14 years, and a minimum of 35 years old.

So the answer to this question is a definitive yes for now. The Constitution, while set in stone, can however be amended in theory. Can Musk therefore in theory become US president? Yes, absolutely.

In order to change or amend the Constitution an amendment can be proposed by a two-thirds quorum of both Houses of Congress. Alternatively this could also be taken into consideration if two-thirds of the States request one, generally by a convention called for that purpose. The amendment must thereafter be ratified by three-quarters of the State legislatures, or three-quarters of conventions called in each State for ratification

How did Elon Musk get citizenship?

Shortly after having graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Musk obtained an immigrant visa in 1997 and immediately applied for US citizenship. By US law, an applicant for US citizenship must be a permanent legal resident for five years before becoming a citizen. Musk waited the required five years and became a US citizen in 2002.

Is Elon Musk a Canadian or American?

Elon Reeve Musk has both Canadian and American citizenship. In addition, he also holds South African citizenship. What he refers to himself if asked is, however, a bit of a mystery. He would probably claim to be a citizen of planet earth.

Conclusion

Elon Musk is a South African-born serial entrepreneur who wears a ton of business hats, and I am not sure how he is able to juggle all those things. He has a net worth of an estimated $209 billion as of mid-2022. Musk finally became a US citizen in 2002 after spending most of his studying years and early working years in the US. He, however, does not meet the requirements to run for president as outlined in the US Constitution, and has hinted at a potential run for office in the future. While Musk has not formally announced any plans to run for president, he has drawn both criticism and support for his political opinions and actions. Some believe he has the potential to make quantum leaps that will take humanity forward, while others believe he is only interested in self-promotion.

Musk is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, but has been a resident of the US for at least 14 years. He is therefore not eligible to run for president of the United States. However, he also has not indicated any interest in doing so. Not yet!
